Pingyao, in the Shanxi province, used to be an influential center for finance in China. A lot of its former splendor has been saved as nearly 4,000 houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties have been preserved and/or restored, as well as its 6km-long city walls. The historical center, with its lovely courtyards in old residences and brightly decorated temples, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so it attracts its fair number of tourists. However, when one ventures out of the busiest streets, one can catch a glimpse into the ordinary lives of the locals.
